Coating Operator

Our Coating Operator supports Mativ’s Sustainability and Adhesives Solution Function.  This individual will perform the operations required to set up and operate the coating machines by applying specific adhesive to a variety of release liners and substrates. Operators in this classification are responsible for the full set-up and operation of the coating machines, inclusive of both the wet and dry ends of the machine and must maintain a clean room appearance at all times. The shift schedule is Monday-Thursday, 5:45am-6:00pm.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Utilizing specified materials, cleans coating machine, as directed, for process preparation and to ensure the product quality to specification
  • Prepares raw materials (adhesive, solvents, additives, and liners) for use in the coating process at the assigned machine.
  • Is properly trained in the use of various material handling equipment (lift trucks, hoists, platform trucks, etc.) as needed to properly move and position these materials for the product to be processed. Uses safe lifting practices.  Heavy lifting/movements are involved.
  • Confirms the job work order and product process sheets complies with the material set-up to be processed at the machine. Must enter data information into the computer system and to insure inventory accuracy for each job.
  • Operators in this classification must be capable of the complete set-up and operation of the wet and dry end as well as all other coater related machine functions.
  • Must ensure maximum function of the machine to ensure high quality end product, safety and efficiency.  This is including changeovers, cleaning and simple maintenance.
  • Ensure that material for subsequent jobs if prepared at the machine.
  • Requires the safe lifting and positioning of pumps into a drum of adhesive (pump weighs 32 lbs.).
  • Ensure smooth transition during shift change by communicating the activities during the shift. Requires you to be at the machine ten minutes before start of shift.
  • Alerts shift supervisor to any quality issue or machine malfunction.
  • Training of coater operators and assistants in the function of their responsibilities.  Ability to train new employees. 
  • Responsible for cell housekeeping and assists with general department housekeeping as required.
  • Promotes teamwork. 
  • Organizes the work station to maximize efficiency and safety.
  • Complete all necessary adjustments and fine tunes equipment to achieve.
  • Displays attributes in line with Mativ’s North Star and Company Values.
  • Ensures that all aspects of the operation perform in accordance with ISO Procedures.
  • Participation in continuous improvement programs to enhance manufacturing processes.
  • Assist the department as required.
  • All other duties as required.

 

Qualifications:

 

Required

  • Sets up coating machine, using measuring instruments, to obtain specified mill thickness of adhesive and coated width of material.
  • Activates and properly sets pressure, tension, and temperature dials, buttons, and gauges to start and operate machine according to the parameters of the work order and production medical sheet.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain product quality with in the specifications of the run/process sheets (correct line speed, temperatures, adhesive application of product etc.) Visually inspects the material and adhesive during the coating process for defects. Continuously monitors the quality of the product in process and inserts flagging when needed. Notifies shift supervisor of any non-conformance.
  • Requires a high school diploma, (or equivalent G.E.D) fluency in English both verbal and written, basic math and reading skills, mechanical aptitude and the ability to accurately use all measuring devices. Must have good computer skills for data entry.

 

Preferred

  • Good manual dexterity
  • Ability to lift cartons and product on a continual basis
  • Working knowledge of ERP Systems
  • Good eyesight to identify product defects while packing
  • Ability to use and understand basic math
  • Computer aptitude

 

Position Demands 

Conditions are that of a manufacturing environment:

  • Air Temperatures can range from cold to hot.
  • Atmosphere may contain dust, fumes, and odors.
  • May include mechanical, electrical, chemical, explosive and radiation hazards.

Employees are required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including:

  • Safety shoes (steel toe or composite toe)
  • Safety Glasses
  • Bump Caps
  • Protective Gloves, when performing certain tasks
  • Hearing Protection, when required
  • Other personal protective equipment as required for certain tasks.
  • Respirator

While performing the duties of this job the employee must meet the physical demands:

  • Be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Be able to push or pull heavy objects up to 250 pounds.
  • Be able to work 12-hour shifts.
  • Perform repetitive tasks.
  • Routinely stand, sit, hear, walk, and talk.
  • Reach, climb, bend, kneel, crouch, twist, and balance, sometimes in awkward or tight spaces.
  • Have good close vision, depth perception, and the ability to focus.
