Asset Lead - Paper Machine

Description:

The Asset Lead is responsible for providing leadership of all safety, production and quality initiatives for the paper machine and its crew, while driving out costs through improved performance. The Whiting Mill serves a very diverse customer base and produces a multitude of premium products, so the successful candidate must be comfortable working in a fast paced, dynamic environment with a heavy focus on meeting customer needs. The Asset Lead will be required to work on site at the Whiting Mill in Stevens Point, WI.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Keep environmental and employee safety top-of-mind in the completion of all tasks. Support mill-wide safety efforts to achieve a 0 OSHA recordable rate. Lead investigations of safety-related issues, drive to root cause and ensure completion of all safety-related corrective actions.
  • Provide leadership to meet or exceed quality management targets that will ensure conformance to customer requirements and the Company’s own standards. Display a willingness to advocate for the customer in making quality and production decisions. Review all quality deducts and customer complaints, and communicate findings and remediation plan to the paper machine crew. 
  • Set aggressive and realistic goals for asset R/O, yield and uptime, and communicate objectives to members of the team. Work to remove barriers to success on behalf of the paper machine team. Learn and demonstrate a clear understanding of the paper machine’s capabilities.
  • Collaborate across departments in driving a clear and comprehensive cost-reduction strategy.
  • Implement processes and initiatives aimed at increasing employee involvement and ownership, while promoting continuous improvement. Serve as the champion for change on the paper machine.
  • Assess both the strengths and opportunities for improvement in team members, and respond accordingly. Work with Training department to identify and address training gaps.
  • Manage all corrective and disciplinary issues with consistency and fairness. Conduct disciplinary investigations and meetings when warranted. May be required to represent the Company in grievance meetings.  
  • Approve SOPs, other training materials, and assess trainee readiness to perform job duties on their own.
  • Assist in the development, implementation and execution of mill capital plans. Support capital spending to sustain operations, support strategic initiatives and reduce costs while meeting financial expectations.
  • Maintain a clear plan of prioritized work that can be conducted during any unanticipated machine downtime.
  • Execute Design Safety Reviews for new equipment added to the asset, or modifications to existing equipment.  
  • Maintain high levels of housekeeping and sanitation, and work to keep the mill in “tour-ready” condition for customer visits.  

 

Qualifications:

Required

  • A minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience, with the proven ability to lead a team.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, paper science or related field. Prior related experience in a process-oriented manufacturing environment and continuous improvement processes will be considered.   
  • Experience managing to a budget and making decisions that impact the overall department’s success.
  • Must be able to work on rotating weekends (typically 5 weekends per year. Weekends may also include adjacent holidays.)
  • Must be able to wear required PPE when needed, and travel through the facility to perform tasks in areas that are hot and humid. This may require climbing stairs or ladders.

 

Preferred

  • Continuous improvement background, or familiarity with continuous improvement methodologies and tools.
  • Experience with customer interactions; ideally collaborating with others to help define needs, identify solutions and resolve problems.
  • Experience managing employees in a union shop and administering a collective bargaining agreement. Prioritizes maintaining a good working relationship with the Union.
  • Able to discern if and how A.I. / predictive analytics technologies could be utilized in the papermaking process.  
  • Familiarity with any of these programs is a plus: Oracle, PARCview, ABB, QiSoft, Concur, Velocity, SharePoint.

 

COMPETENCIES:

  • Exercise strong problem solving, analytical and work prioritization skills.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. 
  • Ability to assess what data is needed, and then use the data to understand and communicate machine events to mill leadership and machine crews.  
  • Comfortable presenting information in front of groups and defending business decisions. Owns the message behind business decisions when presenting information.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, delegate work and meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrate ability to mentor Machine Tenders and other hourly leaders in what it takes to motivate and guide the crews that they lead.
