Provide leadership and management direction to paper manufacturing operations on the Neenah #8 Paper Machine, to ensure achievement of all asset, mill, and applicable Fine Paper & Packaging objectives while conforming to established policies, procedures, guidelines, budgets and/or specifications and applicable local, state, and federal codes and laws. Collaborate with other departments/asset leads to positively affect overall optimization of Neenah operations.
The incumbent reports to the Neenah Mill Manufacturing Manager and is responsible for asset operation activities including safety, quality, cost, productivity, and talent development on the N8 Paper Machine.
This role is responsible for the safe, compliant operation of the Asset, work processes and system implementation; regulatory compliance; efficiency improvements; and customer performance. The role empowers employees to utilize, and improve work processes and systems designed to stabilize and improve the manufacturing process, quality, and cost. Role develops crew member skills, empowerment, and value creation.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

- Responsible for the safety performance and overall results of those employees/contractors/suppliers under my supervision or in those areas I support.
- Promote hazard recognition and incident reporting of all types (near miss, first aid, property damage, etc.) in areas of responsibility.
- Consistently hold myself and those I supervise or support, accountable for safety policy and rule compliance. Timely coaching, documentation, and appropriate action will be taken when non-compliance issues arise.
- Demonstrate safety leadership by actively seeking purposeful safety interaction with ALL employees under my supervision or in those areas I support.
- Actively utilize the acquired Safety Leadership tools such as Moment of High Influence, Darn Good Questions, and Management By Walking Around.
- Responsible for the periodic communication of open work orders with an emphasis on those related to safety, including items that contribute to process or property losses.
- Responsible for the completion of all DSRs, training material creation/updates, lock-out procedures and employee training I am assigned, prior to commissioning of new or altered equipment.
- Emphasis on Pre-Contact Controls and Audits with all new equipment installations, engineered solutions, and process modifications. (vs. post-install/modify/change).
- Responsible for timely completion of all items assigned to me on the VelocityEHS Action Register.
- Responsible for leading all Incident Investigations (safety, quality, process loss) occurring on my shift or in my area of responsibility, using appropriate investigation techniques and comprehensive reporting.
- Responsible for prompt (8-24 hrs) employee follow-up for all EIRs entered on my shift or in my area of responsibility.
- Responsible for completion of required safety one-on-ones, understanding that meaningful two-way safety communication is vital to our success.
- Responsible for ensuring 100% compliance on pre-use inspections, LOTO, Confined Space, Line Break, and Hot Work for all employees supervised.
- Responsible for 100% completion of Zone 1A Planned Inspection.
- Responsible for ensuring 100% compliance on all regulatory items within my area of responsibility.
Maintain Mativ’s reputation for superior product quality and dependable service
- Accountable and responsible for quality policy and procedural successes and failures on the asset
- Ensure all crews perform all quality inspection checks, e.g., winder inspections, and report on compliance gaps through the Electronic Incident Reporting system.
- Ensure corrective actions are developed for any quality inspection compliance gaps and entered into the Action Register.
- Ensure fact finding investigation for all workmanship customer complaints with follow-ups entered into Action Register.
- Ensure a Quality CAR (corrective action request) for any complaint category that exceeds $20,000 in a rolling 12-months.
- Review all deducts and complaints with action items and follow-ups as necessary
- Support changes to products, product development, and customer service effectively and efficiently. Actively engage in the process and propose improvements that reduce cost/add value.
- Setup of new items in the stock prep database, paper machine database, and ABB (grade and color)
Optimize Asset Contribution to the Business
- Implement and utilize Department’s Management Systems to ensure operating risks are proactively assessed and mitigated to prevent unplanned events (i.e. Operator/mechanical rounds, standardized work, daily planning/mitigation activities).
- Software systems include: SkillsNow, ParcView, Quality Access DB, Production Access DB, Consumables Access DB, Scrap/CY excel tracking sheets, Velocity, SharePoint, Oracle (timecards, work order approvals), Scheduling excel sheet, Concur
- Weekly Report Communications are completed on-time and are value-added so that performance metrics/results can be communicated and understood across the organization.
- Develop specific annual Asset Improvement Strategies to improve yield, uptime, and labor efficiency, targeting 6-month “project” execution cycles for results.

- Leverage data acquisition system to lead asset performance improvement
- Utilize asset-based teams to drive engagement and individual success.
- Utilize Asset Strategy Improvement Process to organize and execute continuous improvement
- Collaborate with planning and scheduling to ensure the lowest cost system balance without jeopardizing customer service.
- Make sure the schedule is updated out at the machine with the correct Pattern Detail Reports
- Develop and maintain initiatives to ensure long term reliability of the Plant, Property, and Equipment in paper manufacturing.
- Data acquisition systems are utilized to define all 3 crew’s and employees’ controllable metrics (i.e. Loss per job, speed compliance)
- Loss events follow documented protocol for fact finding and full, documented investigation within 72 hours:

- Any major process loss over $20,000.
- Equipment breakdown (over $10,000 or greater than 2 hours)
- Update furnish and machine settings cards when significant changes are made for those grades
- Distribute grade specific TWI’s for unique grades/situations
- Manage machine roll grind frequency, machine fabric inventory/changes, foil blade inventory/changes, shower nozzle inventory/changes, dandy maintenance/storage/movement, cleaner cone change frequency
- Approve work orders, prioritize weekend/downtime work, develop long term maintenance solutions to critical issues/risks
Support capital project execution to sustain Asset, support strategic initiatives and reduce costs while meeting financial expectations
- Assist in developing, prioritizing, and managing the execution of Asset cost savings and sustaining initiatives.
- Achieve Asset targeted cost savings results through organics and capital project execution.
Promote organizational effectiveness by enhancing culture and developing talent
- Create an environment where excellence is the standard.
- Accountable for hourly employee development plans and strategies in the Asset area
- Meet with employees training in the asset area on their first day/shift
- Check in periodically throughout training to ensure they know the critical safety, quality, and cost aspects of the job.
- Make sure employees are reviewing all SkillsNow documents
- Conduct signoff meetings to qualify employees in the asset area (signoff in SkillsNow as well)
- Review document changes in SkillsNow and modify documents as needed
- Approve new documents added in the Asset Area
- Set clear expectations and hold employees accountable to them.
- Conduct coaching sessions for poor performance. Proceed to progressive discipline if performance doesn’t improve
- Conduct disciplinary meetings for poor behavior and attendance
- Manage with a high level of balanced accountability for yourself and hourly workforce.
- Drive hourly employee development and engagement in key initiatives around safety and cost improvement.
- Participate in cross functional teams to share best practices and improve performance of all assets.
- Be on time to meetings.
- Office Housekeeping: ensure your office meets the same organization and housekeeping standards we expect of our employees’’ operating areas. We must set and model the example.
- Have a clear agenda for all scheduled meetings
- Participate in the weekend call schedule rotation
- Report out on #8 paper machine at the morning meeting at 845 to discuss safety, quality, cost, maintenance, production concerns from the prior day and looking forward
- Be available for calls and to come in on off hours to address issues as they arise on the asset
- Operations QCS management
- Work with maintenance on obsolescence
- Manage on-going issues and address internally or with technical support from ABB
- Review quality samples every morning at 8am (weekend samples only when on-call for that weekend)
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, paper science or related field is desired.
- Prior related experience in a process-oriented manufacturing environment and continuous improvement processes will be considered.
- A demonstrated track record of proven performance and ability to lead teams.
- Experience with customer interactions; ideally collaborating with others to help define needs, identify solutions and resolve problems.
- Enjoys working with and collaborating with members of operations and at all levels throughout the organization.
