Sr. Process Engineer-Chemist

Mativ Brownville & Lowville is looking for a Sr. Process Engineer / Chemist to join our dynamic team where your experience and efforts make a difference. This position will be located in the Brownville & Lowville, NY mills. The incumbent will work within the Operations & Technical Departments to support key initiatives and help drive and achieve short and long-term goals. This position will be expected to help look at the overall business (from raw materials to finished products), prioritize process improvements needs, work with the team to find solutions and take responsibility for implementing those solutions. This position will report to Lowville Site Operations Manager. 

 

Responsibilities: 

 

  • Develop an in-depth understanding of all manufacturing equipment and processes to effectively manage new product development, cost reduction opportunities, and process optimization 

  • Support, participate and exemplify the corporate Mativ Value system as appropriate, with the objective of achieving overall business goals and objectives. 

  • Support the Mativ Zero Incident Culture for safety and environmental in the philosophy that all incidents are preventable. 

  • Participate in and lead zero incident safety culture initiatives such as planned inspections, Velocity reporting and investigations, PPE auditing, etc. 

  • Complete all required safety training activities.  

  • Support both mill’s technical efforts to drive quality performance and continuous improvement of our papermaking and off-line coating processes.

  • Provide adequate quality expectations, specifications, standards and technical expertise to the Operations team to ensure customer satisfaction and 1st time quality execution.

  • Develop and implement systems to ensure analysis of mill process capability in relation to specifications. Communicate and address identified concerns, as appropriate.

  • Manage supplier quality concerns in cooperative effort with procurement and COA information to ensure cost-effective delivery of materials that allow us to produce quality products in an economical fashion. 

  • Provide technical knowledge to improve the quality of existing products and/or new product development. 

  • Complete cost optimization projects that provide significant savings through product substitution, reduced variability, improved quality, and higher operating efficiency. 

  • Collaborate on technical reports that clearly document trials, process improvement results, and capture cause and effect relationships. 

  • Support development and execution of capital projects. 

  • Ensure trial activities comply with corporate, state, and federal laws and regulations, including employee and product safety requirements 

  • Conduct laboratory and machine trials to support new product development projects 

  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams, such as Operations and Technical, to develop and execute trial plans. 

  • Work with cross-functional teams internal and external to the organization, including customers 

  • Determine and test Critical to Quality specifications for products and processes 

  • Create and control intellectual property 

  • Serve as an expert in product design 

  • Execute projects within the framework of the established Stage-Gate process 

  • Generate technical reports with relevant data, conclusions, and recommendations 

  • Travel up to 10 %, excluding local travel to outside service providers, customers, or internal mill locations 

 

Education / Certifications: 

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, or related areas such as pulp and paper science, and demonstrates process troubleshooting and analytical problem-solving abilities. 

  • Prior related experience in a process-oriented manufacturing environment and continuous improvement processes such as Lean and Six Sigma are preferred. 

  • Experience; 7 years in manufacturing required in paper or coating operations 

  • Microsoft programs, Quality databases, and preference for DCS/QCS knowledge. 

  • Must have the ability to design and evaluate equipment and processes in terms of chemistry, control strategies, mechanical integrity, energy transfer, thermodynamics, mass transfer, and fluid dynamics. 

  • Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to communicate within all levels of the organization. 

  • Ability to multi-task effectively in a fast-paced production setting

  • Strong problem solving, quantitative, and analytical skills.

  • Strong skills in various applications including Microsoft, and ERP systems
